What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Dungeons and Dragons, often abbreviated as DnD, is a tabletop roleplaying game created in the 1970s by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game's popularity has exploded in recent years thanks to its accessibility and depictions in popular culture such as the movie Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the show Stranger Things.

Players create characters based on the game’s classes, roll for their abilities, and interact with each other and the world created by the Dungeon Master. The Dungeon Master, abbreviated as DM, describes the world and the people in it. The game relies heavily on cooperation between both players and DM. â€‹

Why should you play?

Dungeons and Dragons is a world without bounds, where the only limits are your imagination. You can go searching for lost treasures in ancient ruins or battle fearsome creatures to save a kingdom; anything you and the rest of your party can come up with is possible! There's a ton of room for improvisation and interaction with the people and world around you.

The structure of DnD actively encourages creativity, collaboration, and paying attention to details. It also requires focused attention for long periods of time. The game relies on roleplay and real-time responses to things that other players do. It also teaches manners and cooperation; players must wait patiently for their turns and work with each other to pull off their plans. Playing the game with a regular group helps build community and gets people offline. It also helps prepare young people for later life because the skills they learn can help them with real world problem solving through creativity, collaboration, and imagination.

Not only is DnD fun to play, it also helps improve your mental health. Due to the rise of cell phones and fast paced social media like Tiktok it has been harder for children to maintain their attention span and form in-person bonds. The Covid-19 Pandemic also contributed to social isolation and dependency on electronics. DnD helps strengthen both of those skills as proven in “A Study on the Efficacy of the Tabletop Roleplaying Game Dungeons & Dragons for Improving Mental Health and Self-Concepts in a Community Sample (Merrick, Alyssia, Li, Wendy Wen, and Miller, Dan J. (2023)”. This research says, “Participants demonstrated significant decreases in depression, stress, and anxiety and significant increases in self-esteem and self-efficacy over the study period.”

How do I start?

First off, try to find a group of people willing to play with you. They could be friends and classmates or other players involved in local gaming communities. Places like schools or game shops usually host spaces. Do a Google search for local groups or ask a teacher or parent to help. Second of all, familiarize yourself with the rules of the game and how to fill out a character sheet, which you can find on the next page.
